4-Wheel Driving New Zealand

Things to Know Before Off-Roading in New Zealand
  • Respect the Environment: New Zealand is known for its natural beauty. When off-roading, stay on designated tracks and trails to minimise environmental impact. Respect wildlife, plants, and the local ecosystem.
  • Check for Permits: Some off-road areas may require permits. Make sure you obtain a permit before heading out (If it is needed). This helps regulate and manage the impact on the environment and ensures safety.
  • Weather Conditions: New Zealand’s weather can be unpredictable. Check the weather forecast before your trip. Although rain can be quite fun at times when off-roading, getting stuck in a remote location is not. Be prepared for all situations.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Off-road areas can be remote, so be prepared for emergencies. Carry a first aid kit, communication devices, extra food, water, and clothing. Inform someone about your plans and expected return time.
  • Trail Etiquette: Make sure to use your common sense and keep an eye out for other off-roaders or hikers on the trail. Make sure to reduce speed when passing and always give way to vehicles coming up the hill when you are driving down. For more road rules see the NZAA site.
